Officer Vernon Jones was a night officer for the then township of Franklin, VA. On the night of May 10, 1932, Officer Jones had arrested a suspect for larceny and was transporting him to the jail in Courtland, VA. Prior to arriving at the jail the suspect brought out a concealed handgun and shot Officer Jones.
